At Academy of the Arts, Judaism is not just another subject taught to children but a full system of values and traditions that the children learn to love and appreciate so that they develop a strong character, good values and pride in their traditions.

Students learn the Jewish Calendar, Hashkamat Haboker-Morning Routine and blessings, to pray with a siddur, all the holidays, the different blessings we say, weekly Torah portions and about Jewish morals and values. This is all taught in a fun, interactive, hands-on way!

 


 

Kindergarten

Students learn the Jewish Calendar, Hashkamat Haboker-Morning Routine and blessings, to pray with a siddur, all the holidays, the different blessings we say, weekly Torah portions and about Jewish morals and values.
Kindergarten has Hebrew once per week to instill a love of the language, pique their interest, and begin a basic understanding of Hebrew as it is part of the life of the school. Teaching includes a lot of songs, stories, body movement, and fun.

First Grade

Students begin by reviewing how to read Hebrew accurately and fluently. They also learn Hebrew script. They then move on to learning inside the text of the Chumash which begins with the 6 days of creation. They focus on prefixes, shorashim (root words) and translation. We conclude the year with a Chumash party where each student receives their very own Chumash.

In Jewish Discovery Learning, they learn the Jewish Calendar, Hashkamat Haboker-Morning Routine and blessings, all the Jewish holidays, Mitzvot we can do with different parts of our body, weekly Torah portions, exploring the different cities in Israel and about Jewish morals and values.

First Grade has Hebrew once per week to instill a love of the language, pique their interest, and begin a basic understanding of Hebrew as it is part of the life of the school. Teaching includes a lot of songs, stories, body movement, and fun.

Second Grade

In Jewish Discovery Learning, they learn the Jewish Calendar, Hashkamat Haboker-Morning Routine and blessings (include more than what they learned in First Grade), all the Jewish holidays, Kosher animals- what we can learn from them and how they connect to the Torah, Shabbat- how to prepare for Shabbat, the foods of Shabbat and the beauty behind Shabbat, weekly Torah portions, Israel- Kibbutz Goliyot- the different Aliyot and the cultures they bring and Perkei Avot- ethical teachings of our Torah Sages that reflect on our own lives.

Second Grade has Hebrew once per week to instill a love of the language, pique their interest, and begin a basic understanding of Hebrew as it is part of the life of the school. Children will be introduced and become familiar with the following in Hebrew during the year:

  • Shorashim – root words
  • Prefixes
  • Translation
  • Comprehension of the storyline
  • Greeting and responses
  • Questions
  • Directions
  • Pronouns
  • Counting from 1 t 20
  • Vocabulary words about the holidays, Shabbat, parts of the tree
  • Common Hebrew day words

Third Grade

Students continue practicing accuracy and fluency in their Hebrew reading. They begin learning inside the Chumash with Parshat Vayeira. Parshat Vayeira talks about Abraham inviting guests to his home after he just had a brit mila. Sarah is blessed with a son Yitzchak and concludes with Akaidat Yitzchak (the bringing of Yitzchak as a sacrifice)- the last of the 10 tests of Abraham. The skills they focus on are:

Third Grade begins to learn “Rashi”. Rashi is a commentary on the Chumash. They learn the different Rashi letters and together they decipher the question and answer that Rashi has. This helps them understand the text better and usually answers many of their own questions.

In Jewish Discovery Learning, they learn the Jewish Calendar, Hashkamat Haboker-Morning Routine and blessings (more in depth) with an interactive scrapbook, all the Jewish holidays, all about Rosh Chodesh, Tefillah-the table of contents in a siddur, weekly Torah portions, Israel- the different special cities in Israel and their history (they create a mini-Israel out of clay), All about a Jewish Home, Jewish heroes and Perkei Avot- ethical teachings of our Torah Sages that reflect on our own lives.

Third Grade has Hebrew once per week to continue to instill a love of the language, pique their interest, and begin a more knowledgeable understanding of Hebrew as it is part of the life of the school. Students will be introduced and become familiar with the following in Hebrew during the year. The class is Hebrew immersion.

Fourth Grade

The students continue practicing accuracy and fluency in their Hebrew reading. They begin learning inside the Chumash with Parshat Toldot. Parshat Toldot talks about Rebecca having twins- Jacob and Esau. Esau sells his birthright to Jacob. Jacob learns while Esau hunts. Jacob takes the blessing from their father Yitzchak that is blind away from Esau. Esau gets really upset and begins the chase to get Jacob.

Fourth Grade adds in learning “Rashi”. Rashi is a commentary on the Chumash. They learn the different Rashi letters and together they decipher the question and answer that Rashi has. This helps them understand the text better and usually answers many of their own questions. Students are asked to read Rashi on their own and to try to figure out Rashi’s question and answer.

In Jewish Discovery Learning, they learn the Jewish Calendar, Hashkamat Haboker-Morning Routine and blessings (more in depth and taking notes), all the Jewish holidays, weekly Torah portions-through Parsha Pop-up, Kosher, Jewish Heroes, Israel- digging into our past, archeology, footsteps in our history, a sense of Israel’s geography and Israeli inventions.

Fourth Grade has Hebrew once per week to continue to instill a love of the language, pique their interest, and begin a more knowledgeable understanding of Hebrew as it is part of the life of the school. Children will be introduced and become familiar with conversational Hebrew. The class is Hebrew immersion. In Fourth Grade they focus on Hebrew stories and doing hands-on every day activities in Hebrew example: cooking, creating recipes, games etc.

Fifth Grade

The students continue practicing accuracy and fluency in their Hebrew reading. They begin learning inside the Chumash with Parshat Vayeitzei. Parshat Vayeitzi talks about Jacob having a dream on a mountain. Jacob then travels to Charan and works for Laban. Jacob intends to marry Rachel but gets tricked and marries her sister Leah. Jacob continues to work for Laban and marries Rachel as well. Leah gives birth to 6 children. Rachel gives her maidservant Bilhah to Jacob to marry and Bilhah gives birth to 2 children. Leah then gives her maidservant to Jacob to marry and Zilpah gives birth to 2 children. Rachel finally then gives birth to Joseph. Finally, Jacob leaves Charan.

Fifth Grade has Hebrew 3x a week to continue to instill a love of the language, pique their interest, and having them become more knowledgeable in Hebrew reading and understanding. Students will focus on dikduk- grammar, vocabulary lists, Hebrew stories and hands on activities in Hebrew. The class is Hebrew immersion.
